We would like to introduce you to our team member, financial manager, Sinazo Konza.
What’s one professional skill you’re currently working on?
I am currently enrolled at the University Of South Africa studying Accounting Science. I have also been reading extensively on Donor fatigue and the impact Covid-19 is having on the economy and how it will affect NPO’s in South Africa.
Who has influenced you most when it comes to how you approach your work?
My mentor. I am generally a person who absorbs and learns as much as I can from anyone I meet in this field.
What led you to this career?
Numbers have always been something that I enjoyed, and I have always been drawn to do my part in helping the community. I now get to do both the things that I’m most passionate about.
What’s one thing that surprised you about working at Lefika La Phodiso?
The friendly people I get to work with. The main thing that surprised me was this thing called ‘arts therapy’. I had no idea that something like that was ever possible. It is so beautiful to see something so universal as art being used to therapeutically help those in need.
What makes you happy? Angry?
I am most happy when my accounting books come together and balance nicely.
What makes me angry currently is social injustice and hungry children.
What global or South African issues do you feel most passionate about?
Youth unemployment! Such a huge proportion of our population is so young, under the age of 25, and have little hope at present of ever being gainfully employed.
I feel like there is such a big push to get young people into Universities but little to no plan to assist with training or employment.
How are you dealing/coping with the lockdown and restrictions?
There have been many ups and downs. I have been anxious about my family, being so far away from them, and being prohibited to go see them has been extremely difficult for me.
I have however taken this time to practise self-reflection and have spent a lot of time talking to family. I have started doing things that I never thought I have time for before, such as reading.
What is the one thing that you’ve learned about yourself from Covid19?
That there is no limit to how much sleep I can get. I have learned that self-care is important. It is so important to take care of your mental, emotional and physical health.
