Our Saturday programmes began in response to Covid. They take place outside in the courtyard, and depending on the lockdown levels, are attended by between 100and 150 children. We are mindful that after a long week at school, our Saturday morning sessions need to be experienced, much like our holiday programmes, as a mix between learning, albeit our creative approach, and a space to recharge. The benefit of mornings as opposed to after-school programmes is that the majority of children, and adults, are sharper in the morning, hopefully refreshed after a decent night’s sleep and thus able to absorb and retain knowledge. Our Open Studio facilitators developed art activities for home with art packs distributed to each child. The following week the children shared their “home-art” (not homework!) with the group. The structure of the morning shapes itself and the outside space is perfect for physical activities such as dancing. Importantly each child enjoys a nutritious snack and their week has a focus. The sustainability of our Saturday morning sessions are dependent on funding.
