16 September – Exploring the Elements – The Art of Fire

Join us for an online reflective workshop series where we explore the elements through art and music. This workshop will be facilitated by DJ Lola/Anita van der Merwe, who will also provide the musical backdrop for this exploration, and drama therapist Rozanne Myburgh.

The Art of Fire

Join us for the second workshop in the Exploring the Elements series, The Art of Fire, to connect with your energy source/life force and to explore your passion, intention, boundaries and focus. In this discovery we will look at the following questions: What lights the fire of your creativity? What do you desire to create more of in your life? Where do you need to be clearer about your boundaries? How can your passion serve your greater community?

We will use the medium of art-making as it is about play, discovery, curiosity, engaging lightly but with full presence in the moment – so we don’t have to take ourselves too seriously as we engage with these poignant reflections.

How it works

Gather all the art materials you can find at home. Set aside a space where you can work comfortably and, most importantly, undisturbed for two hours. We will start with a welcome and introductions. This will be followed by a guided meditation to connect with our bodies, open our hearts and feel the connection in the group. Thereafter, the invitation is to creatively engage in art-making for an hour to a curated set of music. The art-making is non-directive, meaning you can use the music as inspiration and create what you want, in the way you want. Our focus is on the process and the exploration, not the end product. We will then come back together as a group to reflect on the process and to share, should we choose to.

No previous arts experience is necessary for this workshop.

In the Exploring the Elements workshop series:

Art of Water – 11 October or 14 October 2020

What wants to flow through you? Where do you need more fluidity in your life? Exploring connection, receptivity, surrender, release, nourishment, feelings.

Art of Air – 8 November or 11 November 2020

What inspires you? What do you dream of? We will engage with breath, imagination, vision, perception, the bigger picture.

About the facilitators

Anita van der Merwe/DJ Lola is a dancer, dreamer and DJ. She believes movement and the arts can be a key to unlocking our potential as humans, through connection with our body-mind-hearts, each other, the natural world around us, and the universe. Through art-making, we connect the pure potential of our dreaming mind with the body, therefore giving it expression and potency in the everyday world. Anita is also a sub-editor, InnerLifeSkills coach, movement facilitator and curator of musical journeys.

Rozanne Myburgh is a drama therapist, registered at the HPCSA. After completing her MA in Drama therapy with distinction at the University of Witwatersrand‘s Drama For Life, she spent a year at Ububele Educational & Psychotherapy Trust in Alexandra, Johannesburg. Rozanne is the training coordinator at Lefika La Phodiso. She is also a qualified Expressive Movement Facilitator. She loves working with groups and individuals and believes in the creative arts therapies as an important healing tool.
